Bp as a Poster for All Foreign Investors to See
The hard times for BP in Russia have been predictably inevitable for a few years now. The emerging new power needed a new base to take over the country. Power needed funding and penetrating control tools. Valuable KGB heritage and the accumulated wealth of experience of forging high profile lawsuits in a lawless country to quickly and efficiently steer the thought process for millions of abiding citizens was not lost in 1950s. Yukos was used as a poster for all newly baked oligarchs who began to frivolously think that they had earned their riches through talent and hard work. The message was clear: “Do you think Big Brother is dead? Surprise! Big Brother saw everything and He knows how you did it! He can take all your riches away any time unless you do what Big Brother tells you to do! The assets you unjustly acquired are in your temporary possession. You manage them not for your own profit! You will run the business for Big Brother’s benefit!”
To reinforce the message for those who did not get the full wisdom of it, another poster boy was created – Roman Abramovich: foreign investments (Chelsea team, steel industries in North America), complete loyalty, absolutely no political opinions, and even some selfless community work in a form of Chukotka governorship. Businesses in Russia are very hard to start, they are raided by tax police; assets are taken back and “nationalized”; bureaucrats are on the payroll… But nothing will happen to you for a while if you act like the poster boy!
Now that oligarchs and bureaucrats got so incredibly wealthy due to the unbelievable rise of all commodity prices Big Brother wants to make another poster. The message could not be clearer: “Big Brother does not like foreigners. Foreigners are beyond His control at this time and are hard to manipulate. Big Brother has a lot of money and wants to buy foreigners out – for a fee that would be as low as possible, of course, but not quite to the extent that the whole world qualifies this as grand theft. Oligarchs must also invest overseas. The price and economic feasibility are not very important. The primary goal is to expand Big Brother’s circle of control, and if you guys can profit from it – more years of freedom to you!”
Who will prevail in the TNK-BP case? Even without the knowledge of intimate details of the case one with some common sense can guess right. There is only one question that needs to be answered to turn the guess into a conclusion: Are BP’s Russian partners still members of the top business elite (i.e. serving Kremlin now) or the lower level, i.e. used to serve Kremlin, but now temporarily are in the runner-up category because their bosses have been “moved” to a lower level of the power spiral.
British PM Gordon Brown needs to wake up to the reality and intervene. An informal talk at G8 might not be enough. The whole Europe needs to wake up and realize what is happening. If the BP poster goes down in history as the one with Yukos on, the obvious shift of power in the world may turn into a disastrous leap.
