The Mechanics Of The NASCAR Win
It is common for the casual NASCAR fan to believe that the way to win is to have the quickest vehicle. In many cases that is correct. Throughout the week, the drivers and the crews are spending endless hours tweaking their set-ups to produce the fastest car performance they can before entering the race track later that weekend. As reported by NASCAR news sources repeatedly, there is no such thing as a guarantee. Not everyone can be the fastest, which is why teams study a multitude of strategies in order to find ways to win.
Driver David Reutimann won the 2009 Coca Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway following the decision of crew chief Rodney Childers to keep Reutimann’s car on the track while the lead drivers entered the pit. The race was more than half over, and precipitation was falling on the raceway. Should the rains have continued, the race would have been cancelled. As such, Reutimann, and drivers Robby Gordon and Ryan Newman, decided to take their chances with the weather.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. eastern standard time, the NASCAR management stopped the race, and gave Reutimann his first ever win at the Sprint Cup. In the past, a victory in a rain-shortened event had a proverbial asterisk beside it. Fans typically bemoan a win such as that, perhaps referring to it as a lucky break. NASCAR news is readily filled with such press. Still, NASCAR is a highly competitive sport, if not the most competitive type of auto racing on earth. No matter how it is won, most drivers know that if it meant risking a drive in the rain, they would do it without any qualms, provided that it led to victory lane. NASCAR news has been on hand to witness some impressive and creative strategies end in victory.
Strategy played a part in Reutimann’s victory. His crew chief followed the weather report, and believed that it was in his driver’s best interest to stay out. If the rain had ceased, and the cars headed back out on the track, then they were going to have to pit, but according the Childers and Reutimann, they were going to make some crucial adjustments in order to improve the performance of the car. Such reconfigurations would have taken too long. Additionally, Reutimann would have lost his place on the track if they had pit stopped with the others, so he chose to wait on the rain. Their strategy was the winning strategy.
Driver Kyle Busch had maintained the lead for 173 of the 207 laps that were paced, while the winner Reutimann had just gained lead position for five laps and had held fourteenth position at the time the precipitation began.
The NASCAR news agencies made a big deal out of Jeff Gordon’s use of the same strategy to win. Gordon had used the same trick to win at Pocono in 2007. He did not have a car that could contend for the win, but his team sensed that the rain showers were approaching, and it paid off. What’s amazing is that if the rain had started five seconds later, Gordon would have came in second. Ryan Newman was in the middle of passing Gordon when NASCAR displayed the caution flag due to the rain.
It may be that the stars themselves may need to align to achieve a victory on the track. Factors like tire strategy and fuel mileage contribute to the type of strategies that can get a driver to victory without needing the fastest thing on the track.
In 2003, Newman and his Penske Racing team were noted for stretching fuel mileage with a smaller carburetor. Perhaps half of his eight wins during the 2003 racing season were due to fuel mileage strategy.
We have seen drivers in the past use a two-tire pit stop to gain track position late in a race, allowing them the opportunity to go for the win. Often, it has allowed the driver to make get a win.
In NASCAR, a win is a win, no matter the specifics. Regardless of how the trophy reached their hands, a driver is going to accept it.
